I thought I should step up a bit this year…..you know…actually walk the walk not just talk the talk…
I shall explain.
The Diet / Food stuff. You all know I have been “obsessing” for quite some time about what I eat. Immediately after being diagnosed I went online, did my research & found out a last range of foods that I loosely termed Superfoods – food that has a proven scientific benefit for the properties within them that help the body’s cells one way or another.
Superfoods is the wrong term – or at least people don’t like using it. They think of Superfoods as the fads and crazes that supermarkets and celebrities try to convince us are vital for our wellbeing….like wheatgrass shots, Goji berries and so on…some may well be worth investigating….but my thinking of a Super Food is just that….Super! A food that is available to everyone….doesn’t cost the earth…is easy to eat etc….tomatoes, carrots, broccoli.
I was also taking supplements to top up on various key nutrients that the science pages kept telling me I would need in order to best prepare my cells internally. Make myself as healthy as possible on the inside so that when the Melanoma monster reappears my cells make it as hard as possible for it to take hold.
But life is busy…work is busy…..4 of us in the house…2 full time jobs…kids at school with clubs after school, clubs in the evening…..you know….you live like that too….I want to eat fresh and healthy but it is really, REALLY hard to get a decent amount of varied superfoods into my diet on a daily basis….
I would start with good intentions…..7 different things one day, 8 the next, 6 the next….3 the day afterwards….and then there would be four manic days in a row when I would be lucky (hand on heart honesty here) to tick off 2 full portions of a “superfood” per day.
This coincided with my not being able to run post operation in November and since then the food thing has been pretty hit & miss….more hit than miss….but still.
Not eating the right foods….not exercising and oxygenating my cells….then I get a cough & chest infection so I sound like Daisy duck for weeks on end & I know that amongst my 2015 New Year Resolutions needs to be a good nod towards my diet.
So a change. The 1st food change of 2015.
We bought a Juicer.
I know you just fell off your chair & yes I know there are some amongst you that are quite concerned that I am going to turn into one of those seed eating, health fanatics….
…please let me reassure you…the Vodka consumption has not lessened…red wine is still my friend….I would still turn into a snuffling piglet if you put a Pavlova in front of me (I believe if the quantity of red fruits equals the cream they balance each other out so the only sin is the meringue)…..and yes….in my still muddled mind Chocolate covered raisins do count as one of your 5 a day!
But yes….we bought a juicer….and *GASP*….we have used it at least once every single day since we bought it.
OK the novelty for the Little people is still there and they are still excited about the fact that their pudding every night is a glass of juiced fruit with a carrot or two snuck in…but OMG they love it! And they are getting 2 or 3 extra portions of fruit or veg extra per day than just the standard 3 that they would get each night with the evening meal.
The Mr is the pinnacle of supporting husband…..he swigs the concoctions I pass him with trepidation & duty. “I am doing this for you…but by god please don’t make the next one taste of grass.” I am trying to colour theme them a bit….making either yellow ones, red ones or green ones…..becuase the ones where you mix in things that shouldn’t really go together…..the ones that turn sludgy brown…well they are not so nice to drink.
I’m learning.
I am also learning that just because a juice on the internet has 2000 people stating that it is amazing doesn’t mean that it also doesn’t taste like someone is trying to play a hideous prank…here drink this…its nutritious and insanely good for you but will make you heave…pull facial expressions that should never be seen and then said toxic substance will repeat on you throughout the day with tenacious and ruthless evilness…..
I won’t touch celery…yes I believe it is an apparently marvellous food for calorie burning…it burns up way more calories digesting than it gives so has almost magical bottom shrinking properties…..Yada Yada…thing is the juicing isn’t about bottom shrinkage (running however helps wobbling derriere issues)….but celery is something I won’t “eat”…it is yuk…. (childish and unnecessary statement)…..I will pop it into a juice….I don’t have to taste it…..I included it in a Green number that also contained Kale, Apples and Ginger…..and yet it was Celery that I could taste all afternoon.
There are other side effects…..your imagination can process that bit….don’t come that “TMI don’t tell us everything Imogen” with me….this journey is one I am on reluctantly so you can darn well hear the bad and the good….even if that is that I am concerned my poop will be pink after the shocking coloured juice I had for lunch….see below….for pictures of the juice…not the poop….that really would be too much!
I would happily…gratefully receive your favourite juicing recipe…..but only if they taste nice!
